Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare physically and psychologically and perform for live audiences.

The unit applies to those who are training to be actors, dancers, circus performers, musicians or vocalists in the entertainment, theatre and events industries. The process includes developing skills in both a supervised rehearsal and performance setting.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare for performances

1.1 Discuss and confirm performance and role requirements with required personnel

1.2 Identify and obtain resources required for performance in a timely fashion

1.3 Create practice plan according to requirements

1.4 Develop strategies for overcoming performance anxiety

1.5 Carry out physical warm-up exercises

2. Rehearse for performances

2.1 Organise personal presentation, clothing and footwear according to requirements of performance and rehearsals

2.2 Develop technical skills and address performance issues during private rehearsals

2.3 Participate in rehearsals as required and adjust performance techniques in response to feedback from required personnel, own critical analysis and observation of others’ performances

2.4 Observe health and safety principles in private and group rehearsal and performances

3. Perform basic techniques

3.1 Implement injury prevention, psychological and physical maintenance strategies from practice plan

3.2 Follow the lead of other performers as required

3.3 Respond flexibly and effectively to contingencies as required and demonstrate performance integrity

3.4 Demonstrate required control of body and movements

4. Review performance techniques

4.1 Assess and identify injuries post performance and seek advice from required personnel as required

4.2 Seek feedback on own performance from required personnel

4.3 Develop strategies for improving own technique using self-evaluation, feedback from others and analysis of others’ performances

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • demonstrate basic performance techniques during at least two performances, at least one of which must be an ensemble.

In the course of the above the candidate must:

  • apply strategies for overcoming performance anxiety
  • reach required performance standard using personal practice time and rehearsals
  • respond to constructive feedback on own performance
  • identify personal health and safety considerations during practice sessions
  • communicate effectively with others involved in rehearsals or performances
  • prepare personal presentation for performances.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • key features of performance rehearsals including:
  • personal presentation requirements
  • health and safety principles
  • techniques to address performance issues
  • tools and techniques to seek feedback and develop strategies for improving own technique
  • techniques for performing effectively as an ensemble
  • strategies to overcome performance anxiety
  • methods to create dramatic effect using staging
  • requirements for practice plans, including:
  • methods of maintaining physical and psychological condition
  • methods for injury prevention in performances and from overuse
  • common theatre conventions
  • health and safety considerations for rehearsing and performing techniques, including safe lifting practices
  • issues and challenges that arise when preparing for performances and solutions to address them
  • key features of techniques and repertoire in area of specialisation.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • resources and equipment required to demonstrate the performance evidence
  • other performers
  • opportunities for rehearsals and performances.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
